Erodium cicutarium
Redstem Stork's-Bill is an introduced winter annual forming low basal rosettes of fern-like leaves and pinkish-purple five-petaled flowers. Its common name refers to its elongated seed pods, which resemble a stork's beak. Upon drying, the seeds coil tightly and spring open to drill themselves directly into dry soil—a mechanical seed dispersal trick that lets it rapidly colonize disturbed rangeland.
