Purple Threeawn is a graceful native perennial bunchgrass featuring sweeping awns that take on a translucent reddish-purple sheen in summer before maturing to shimmering gold. Thriving on dry, gravelly limestone slopes and overgrazed rangeland, its fibrous roots anchor fragile topsoil while its seed heads feed native sparrows and juncos.
