Gum Bumelia (Chittamwood) is a tough, drought-hardy native tree armed with sturdy branch thorns and leathery leaves covered in rusty down underneath. Indigenous to dry limestone hillsides, its small summer blossoms secrete fragrant nectar that attracts native bees and beneficial insects. In autumn, it produces glossy black drupes rich in sugars that serve as high-energy food for songbirds, coyotes, and raccoons, while serving as a host plant for Henry's Elfin butterflies.
