Verbascum thapsus
Great Mullein is a tall biennial invasive weed introduced from Eurasia. In its first year, it forms a large rosette of soft, velvety grey leaves covered in dense branched hairs that deter herbivores and retain moisture. In its second year, it shoots up a towering flower spike bearing yellow blossoms. Rapidly colonizing disturbed limestone pastures and dry roadsides, its prolific seed production outcompetes native pioneer flora.
