Chenopodium
Goosefoots (genus Chenopodium) comprise native herbal species characterized by goosefoot-shaped leaves and dense spikes of inconspicuous greenish flowers. Rich in proteins and minerals, their young leaves were historically harvested as wild greens ("lamb's quarters"), while their heavy autumn crops of tiny black seeds provide essential, high-calorie winter forage for ground-nesting birds, northern cardinals, quail, and field mice.
