Opuntia engelmannii
Engelmann's Pricklypear is a large, iconic native cactus featuring thick, flattened blue-green pads armed with formidable spines and glochids. In late spring, it produces brilliant golden-yellow flowers that age to salmon-pink, attracting specialized cactus bees (Diadasia). By autumn, these transform into deep purple juicy fruits ("tunas") rich in antioxidants and moisture, sustaining desert tortoises, javelinas, wild turkeys, coyotes, and songbirds, while its spiny thickets offer impenetrable predator protection for nesting birds.
