Description
Cedar Sedge is a delicate, shade-tolerant native sedge that forms soft, lush green carpets beneath the dense evergreen canopy of Ashe Junipers and Live Oaks across the Edwards Plateau. Unlike introduced turfgrasses, it thrives in shallow limestone leaf litter with minimal light and water, binding fragile topsoils against heavy rainfall erosion. Its early spring seed heads provide high-energy forage for ground-feeding songbirds like sparrows, towhees, and dark-eyed juncos, while its dense tussocks shelter beneficial ground beetles, spiders, and small amphibians.
