Juniperus ashei
Ashe Juniper ("Mountain Cedar") is a cornerstone evergreen tree of the Edwards Plateau whose natural history is deeply woven into Central Texas hydrology and wildlife ecology. Thriving on thin limestone karst soils, its vast root networks channel surface rainfall deep into subterranean caves and aquifers, stabilizing fragile hillside topsoils against flash flooding. Historically harvested by early Texas pioneers for rot-resistant fence posts and structural timbers, its shredding, fibrous bark is ecological gold—serving as the sole nesting material used by the endangered Golden-cheeked Warbler (Setophaga chrysoparia) to weave its nests. In winter, its resinous blue berry-like cones provide vital high-calorie food for cedar waxwings, robins, gray foxes, and raccoons.
