Diplotaxis muralis
Annual Wall-Rocket is an introduced mustard family herb adapted to dry, disturbed limestone soils, rocky clearings, and caliche roadsides. Originating in the Mediterranean basin, it features deeply pinnate leaf rosettes with a pungent, pepper-mustard aroma and upright stems bearing small four-petaled yellow flowers. In the Hill Country ecosystem, it colonizes bare soils quickly after spring rains, binding loose gravel and offering an early-season nectar source for foraging native solitary bees, hoverflies, and sulfur butterflies. While it acts as a temporary pioneer herb in disturbed areas, active pasture monitoring prevents it from forming monotypic patches that crowd out native spring wildflowers.
