Description
Agarita is an iconic evergreen Hill Country shrub featuring stiff, trifoliate leaves armed with sharp terminal spines. Historically, early settlers and Native Americans used its bright yellow wood and root sap to produce durable natural yellow dyes, ink, and medicinal tonics, while harvesting its abundant spring berries for wild jellies, cobblers, and wine. Ecologically, its fragrant February yellow blooms erupt long before most native flora, supplying vital early-season nectar for overwintering honeybees and native solitary bees. In midsummer, its sweet red berries feed northern mockingbirds, cedar waxwings, and gray foxes, while its dense, spiny branched canopy offers impenetrable year-round predator protection for nesting songbirds and small mammals.
