A non-migratory resident of rocky, limestone Hill Country hillsides and cedar breaks, recognized by its rufous cap and dark mustache stripe.
Field Identification: Bright rufous crown, white eye-ring, dark black mustache stripe (malar) on pale chin, unstreaked greyish breast, and long tail.
Texas & Hill Country Notes: Rufous-crowned Sparrows are sedentary year-round residents of Edwards Plateau limestone slopes, rarely flying more than a few hundred yards from their territory. They prefer steep rocky terrain with scattered prickly pear and agarita bushes.
