A handsome, vocal raptor of Texas Hill Country creeks and wooded ravines, recognized by its reddish-brown shoulders and translucent wing "windows" in flight.
Field Identification: Bright reddish-orange barred chest and upper wing coverts (shoulders), narrow white bands on a dark tail, and pale translucent crescents near wingtips in flight.
Texas & Hill Country Notes: Red-shouldered Hawks often nest in the same mature oak trees year after year, adding fresh green cedar sprays to line their nests. They frequently form hunting partnerships with Crows and Blue Jays to locate snakes and frogs along creek banks.
