A striking summer breeding resident of Texas savannas. Males feature deep chestnut-red underparts and black upperparts, smaller than the Baltimore Oriole.
Field Identification: Adult male: deep rich chestnut breast and rump with black head, throat, and back. Female: bright yellowish-green overall.
Texas & Hill Country Notes: Unlike bright orange orioles, the male Orchard Oriole is unique in displaying a deep burnished chestnut-red plumage color. They weave intricate pouch nests out of green grass blades suspended from oak or mesquite branch tips.
