Texas & Hill Country Notes: Unlike eastern woodpeckers, Ladder-backed Woodpeckers frequently forage low to the ground on thorny agave stalks, yucca stems, and prickly pear cactus. They excel at nesting in dry mesquite and cedar limbs where larger woodpeckers cannot excavate.
