Also known as the "Mexican Eagle," this magnificent falcon family raptor is a striking resident of Central Texas open savannas, featuring a flat black crest and pale yellow face.
Field Identification: Flat black cap, bare yellowish-orange face skin, white neck and chest with fine black barring, and white wingtips visible in flight.
Texas & Hill Country Notes: Although a member of the Falcon family, Caracaras spend significant time running on the ground hunting snakes, lizards, and turtles. The facial skin of a Crested Caracara changes color from yellow-orange to bright red when the bird is aggressive or excited.
