A neat, slender sparrow species that winter visits Woodline Ranch, foraging in open grassy areas in small peaceful flocks.
Field Identification: Bright rusty-chestnut crown cap, black line through the eye, crisp white eyebrow stripe, and unstreaked greyish-white breast.
Texas & Hill Country Notes: In spring, their song is a rapid, mechanical trill sounding like a sewing machine echoing across open woods. Chipping Sparrows line the inside of their tiny cup nests almost entirely with fine horse and livestock hair.
