A tiny, slender songbird with an amazingly long black-and-white tail that it wags constantly as it gleans insects from leaf tips in oak canopy.
Field Identification: Blue-grey upperparts, white underparts, bold white eye-ring, long black tail with white outer tail feathers, and high thin squeaky call notes.
Texas & Hill Country Notes: Gnatcatchers build exquisite, cup-shaped nests out of plant down and spider webs, decorating the outer walls with grey lichens for camouflage. Their soft, high-pitched "pwee" calls sound like a tiny squeaky toy echoing through the treetop canopy.
